Kings Kaleidoscope Signals Their Awakening With New Single "You And I Again"
Three years after releasing their fourth project Zeal and two years after the last three singles, Kings Kaleidoscope has released a surprise single last week called "You And I Again." Having stumbled across it on Youtube at 2 am the day of its release, I still can't get enough of it.
"You And I Again" is a simple journal entry from lead singer-songwriter Chad Gardner manifested as a minimal track revealing the heart of the artist. Its minuscule structure, strikingly similar in spatial and sonic economics to "The Coma", gives off a beautiful ambiance particularly after the furious reminiscing and searching encompassed in their last album. What is especially gorgeous about it is that it continues the odyssey that has been built across their discography. Namely, the movement from the tone of Zeal to "You and I Again."
Zeal is (and continues to be) among my top favorite albums. It details the journey of the band through apathy and obscurity, faithlessness and aching, towards rediscoving passion for God, music, and life. It transitions between brilliant soundscapes of anguish, yearning, and discovery, teaching listeners to do whatever it takes to breach through the fog to find the fire.
With this in mind, Kings' new single welcomes fans back to the morning, having created a song that sounds as if the singer has woken up for the first time since a long period of unrest and battling. The sun is moments from breaching the horizon and their lungs are taking in the forgotten familiarity of unhindered, burdenless breathing.
I can't help but believe that the Kings are back in album mode and "You And I Again" is the first teaser for what is coming. This might not be a track you continually have on replay, but it is special. Personally, I have needed a song like this one that puts my current sentiments into song. I hope you love it as much as I do.
