Friday Tunes (9/24)

Welcome to Friday Tunes!

(Queue John Cena theme music) Duhn-Dunna-Duhn! Duhn-Dunna-Duh!

I think I might start Friday’s off with something dramatic... I kind of like that idea because it’s Friday, so why not?

Anyway, it’s another addition of Friday Tunes where I share a list of songs I want to give to you! (Don’t you feel special? I hope you do!)

So, let’s get on with it.

#1. Got Me All Wrong - Linden Jay

“Got Me All Wrong” a song that’s easy to put on loop and forget when it starts and ends. It’s kind in that way. It begins with a dreamy voice (that has to be a sample!) singing, “I think you’ve got me all wrong/ You don’t know me at all/ You like the way I make you feel/ You like the way I see right through you,” followed by this mellow beat that comes in like a beam of sunlight in the morning (poetic enough for you?).

It’s a strong Lo-Fi groove that accompanies the looping verse throughout. It’s easy to study to, and it’s even better in loud speakers with plenty of bass.

#2. Birdsong - Beau Diako, Claudia Bouvette

This song is like dancing through a rain forest. It’s sunny with plenty of percussive sounds, wet guitar tones, and a damp bass line. It creates a sound scape that is so pleasant you just want to sit down and smile.

Claudia Bouvette covers the track with a breathy, swinging voice. Like a butterfly, almost. She really solidifies the song, allowing it to come together peacefully.

Listening to this song gives you the safety to close your eyes, put your hands up, and let go. I love it because it lifts my spirits, but that’s just icing on the cake.

#3. Typical - AUDREY NUNA

Alright, alright. I just want to start this off by saying this album, Liquid Breakfast, is amazing (put three g’s on the end of that). Dang, it’s good. What I love about AUDREY NUNA is that she makes a ton of unusual pivots in her lyricism, songwriting, and in her flow.

“Typical” is the pilot track for this album and it’s one of the best demonstrations of her sonic flexibility and experimentation. AUDREY raps in this dual manner that’s half focused and articulate, half drunken slur. Sonically, the chorus moves you through this fever dream where the 808s are sporadic, starting and stopping in rapid fire spurts, and a kazoo-type noise slides in and out of key, stretching and bending from the left speaker to the right.

As far as unique songs go, this one hits the mark. This is something I would expect to hear from Injury Reserve or Tierra Whack. That’s only two names. I don’t think many people can pull this off so well. This is normal for AUDREY NUNA, though. She really has a knack for crafting something new to your ear, something unexpected. And she does it all with bravado. She knows she’s nice with it.

#4. If You Were The Rain - Stephen Day

“If You Were The Rain” has a lot of soul and a lot of early 2010s love pop lyrics. It’s sweet and a little cheesy and I can’t quit listening to it. Day’s voice is really what keeps me coming back. He has a deceptively modest range and enough honesty in his vocals that you just want to hear what he has to say. I’d expect to see him at an open mic or singing this live for a bar under-40-year-olds.

The song has a great instrumental accompaniment that works well with Day, allowing his voice to hold the listener’s attention. Overall, it has a comfy sound. I’d recommend it on a day with sun, a cool breeze, and open windows.
